stolen bandwidth
The ISP management console indicates that we are at 65% of the download limit whilst 37% into this calendar month – thats a whopping 5.2GB of data! Given that our monthly average is about 2.5GB-3GB, this figure looked very suspicious. Examining the daily logs, 3 out of the 10 days this month saw downloads of up to 1GB each day, which is just impossible from our usage. Someone must’ve hacked our WEP key (or we have a virus/malware) – I’ve reinstated MAC filtering, and traffic seems to have subsided in the past 2 days. Here’s hoping that this won’t be an ongoing problem.
You need to change from WEP to WPA access. WEP is hackable.
This router is at least 5 years old, a hand-me-down … so WEP is as tough as its going to get =)
